NFL Franchise Tags 2021
Updated: Mar 24
These players have been franchise tagged by their teams.
WR - Allen Robinson - Chicago Bears
This one hurt for a lot of NFL fans of different teams. Robinson was gonna be one of the most sought after free agent receivers this off-season if the Bears hadn’t franchise tagged him. This could be a sign & trade move for the Bears to ensure they get something for him, as they know he doesn’t want to be there long-term. Teams who would have gone after him in free agency should definitely be in trade talks with Chicago throughout the off-season.
FS - Marcus Maye - New York Jets
This is looking like they ran out of time to get a long term deal done so they had to apply the franchise tag. All indications point to Maye and the Jets coming to an agreement on a long term deal at some point in the future.
WR - Chris Godwin - Tampa Bay Buccaneers
This was a smart move for the Bucs. They’ve had to spend some money to keep their Super Bowl Champion roster together for another run, so prolonging Godwin’s long term deal was the right play for now.
DL - Leonard Williams - New York Giants
The Giants and Leonard Williams have mutual interest to get a long term deal done. I believe they’ll get to that soon, but he’s franchise tagged for now.
OT - Cam Robinson - Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jags franchise tagged their left tackle of the past four years. He was also a 2nd round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft & has been a very solid piece on their offensive line. Jacksonville has the number 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft & word on the street is they’ll be drafting former Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence. Every team needs an elite left tackle to protect their franchise Quarterback. The Jaguars will probably move towards a long term deal as long as he performs well next season.
SS - Justin Simmons - Denver Broncos
There’s not much to be optimistic about when it comes to a long term deal between Justin Simmons & the Broncos. He’ll probably play next year on the franchise tag & then hit free agency after the season.
RT - Taylor Moton - Carolina Panthers
The Panthers still have 3 starters on their offensive line that are about to be free agents, despite franchise tagging Moton. If that doesn’t make this move obvious, I don’t know what will. They’re on the search for a QB so they need to make sure their offensive line is in tact & that starts with Taylor Moton.
S - Marcus Williams - New Orleans Saints
The Saints needed to bring back their 2017 2nd round pick. With Williams being tagged, and Marshon Lattimore & Janoris Jenkins at corner, the Saints have a pretty solid secondary going into next season as of now. Whether or not Williams signs with New Orleans long-term depends on if the Saints can afford the deal. They’re projected to be almost $50 million over the salary cap limit as of now.
RG - Brandon Scherff - Washington Football Team
At this point, they should just sign Scherff long term. This is the second consecutive season they used their franchise tag on their 6 year guard out of Iowa University.
